about

Continuing, or really pretty much beginning, the (largely) chronological chronicling of music by the Arms of Someone New, "Significant Others" was our first official release, on Hysterical Records, the same label we had started to release records by Mel's other band the First Things. The four songs on the cassette-only album were not the first four that we recorded, but they were the four we liked best. Hit The Pavement was the first song that we really felt great about and had fun recording. We were bouncing tracks between a good cassette deck and a mediocre reel-to-reel tape deck, we didn't have multi tracking as an option. As Mel recalls we had no way of "punching in" if there were mistakes; we had to start over from the beginning. That got... frustrating, at times, but it also helped us hone the musicianship on the songs on the first three albums (after which we wrangled a four-track tape deck). What stood out to us both was the sense of freedom from the standard punk pop song format which we both felt had kind of run its course.

Tim Hanafee provided us with a drum machine, Davin Carey with a guitar, Jim Taylor with microphones, and Tim Vear with... we don't remember, to be honest, but over the years he provided a lot of technical expertise, encouragement and inspiration, as well as equipment we occasionally borrowed.

about

The Arms of Someone New Champaign, Illinois

The Arms of Someone New... pre-fi (before there was a lo-fi even).

"Their minimalist soundscapes... definitely overwhelm the listener with the long disappeared yet passionately revered “cult” sound of Goth’s early days. " (from starvox.net)

Formed in 1983 when Mel Eberle and Steve Jones started collaborating, occasionally teaming up with Nick Rudd, Glenn Graham, Tim Hanafee and others.
